July 7, 2006. Ukrainian Lutheran congregations have celebrated John the Baptist Nativity. new thank the Lord on this day for the last prophet of the Old Testament, who prepared the way for the Savior by preaching the Word and who pointed at Christ saying, "Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world" (John 1:29). John the Baptist became a martyr for preaching Christ. He was beheaded by order of the King Herod Antipas. The Lord speaks so about His forerunner, "Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force. For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John. And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come." (Mt. 11:11-14).
