On February 28-29, 2004 Bishop V'yacheslav Horpynchuk has visited the Ukrainian Lutheran congragation in Simferoplol. The Bishop has met leadership and laymen of the congregation as well as participated in the liturgy for the 1st Sunday in Lent. Rev. Dr. John Lawrenz, Tavrian Eparhcy Head, Rev. Serhiy Somin and other people accompanied Bishop Horpynchuk on this visit to Simferopol.


On February 22, 2004 ordination of Pavlo Oskolov took place in the Resurrection congregation in Kyiv. Pavlo Oskolov is called to serve in two congregations of Radomyshl: Saint Mary congregation and Holy Spirit congregation. Bishop V'yacheslav Horpynchuk, Dr. John Lawrenz, Pastors Yuriy Fizer and Oleg Orkruhin as well as many guests from the two congregation of Radomyshl participated in the ordination service. Victor Zatsarniy, the Holy Spirit congregation president on behalf of this remarkable celebration, has presented the Resurrection congregation with a piece of art "The True Vine." He has also read the words from the Scriptures, "I am the vine, you are the branches: He that abides in me, and I in him, the same bears much fruit: for apart from me you can do nothing" (John 15:5). We wish Pastor Oskolov many and happy years in the ministry of the Gospel!


O February 15 new communicant members joined the celebration of the Lord's Supper in St. Joh and James Lutheran Church in Ternopil. Oleksandr Huyda, Andriy Rudyk and Ihor Kokovskiy were confirmed in their saving Lutheran faith and received for the first time in their life the true body and blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. This day was also special for the young men by the celebrations of the 10th anniversary of the renewal of the publics worship service of the Ukrainian Lutheran Church after the collapse of the USSR. May the Lord bless and strengthen these young men for their life and service to the glory of God!


On February 15 Festive Liturgies took place in all the congregations of the Ukrainian Lutheran Church. In such a way Ukrainian Lutherans were celebrating the 10th anniversary of the renewal of the publics worship service of the Ukrainian Lutheran Church after the fall of Communism. Confessional Lutheran Churches from all the continents have greeted the ULC on this remarkable date. The Liturgies were followed with concerts and drama performances.

On February 14, Permanent Diaconate Program had its first classes for the men and women from Kyivan and Tavrian Eparchies of the Ukrainian Lutheran Church. Adjunct Professor Oleh Yukhymenko was teaching first classes. There was a nice discussion on life in congregations of the Church after the classes.

 


February 12, 2004. Kyiv City Rada (Council) - KCR on request of one of a deputy-Communist "celebrated" in its own way the 60th anniversary of physical extermination of the Ukrainian Lutheranism. The session of the KCR has refused to discuss a possibility of land allocation for the Ukrainian Lutheran Church in Kyiv. At the same time Russian and Ukrainian Orthodox churches are being built for tax-payers money as well as buildings are being given to the Russian Orthodox Church and Ukrainian Orthodox Churches for free…Ukrainian Lutheran congregations will celebrate 10th anniversary of the renewal of their public worship life on February 15, 2004.


 

On February 12, 2004 there was held a meeting of the Synodical Council of the Ukrainian Lutheran Church. Members of the Synodical council including representatives of the three Eparchies listened to reports of the ULC Bishop V'yacheslav Horpynchuk, the ULC officers, and head of the Construction Committee Serhiy Nikolayenko. They considered current issues of the ULC activities, as well as participation in the international conferences and studies. On February 8, 2004 graduate of the St. Sophia Theological Seminary deacon Serhiy Romanuk was ordained in the village of Lazarivka, Ternopil region. The ordination ceremony was conducted by Vice Bishop pastor Andriy Honcharuk. Rector of the Seminary Professor David J. Webber, pastors Oleh Yukhymenko, Oleh Okruhin, and Taras Kokovsky participated in the worship service. The ULC pastors, director of the International Charitable Fund Gift of Life Mr. Laper, head of the Ivano-Frankivsk congregation, members of the Lazarivka congregation greeted the new pastor. Bishop of the ULC V'yacheslav Horpynchuk sent brother Serhiy his greeting address. It was read out by pastor Andriy Honcharuk.

On february 4, 2004 the ULC Bishop V'yacheslav Horpynchuk was awarded with a honorary diploma and a pin by the Kyiv City Mayor Oleksandr Omelchenko «for considerable personal contribution in the cause of revival of spirituality and on the occasion of his birthday». The Bishop was presented with a gift from the Kyiv City Mayor - a watch «Kleinod».


On February 1, 2004 graduate of the Ukrainian Theological Seminary of St. Sophia deacon Oleksiy Onufriychuk was ordained to serve as a pastor of the Ukrainian Lutheran Church. Before the ordination Oleksiy successfully completed his vicarage at the Ternopil congregation of the ULC. The ordination ceremony was conducted by Vice Bishop of the ULC pastor Andriy Honcharuk. Pastors David J. Webber, John Lawrenz, Yuriy Fizer, Taras Kokovsky, and Ron Muetzel participated in the worship service. After the ordination pastor Oleksiy distributed his first Holy Supper. Director of the International Charitable Fund Gift of Life Mr. Laper and all those present greeeted the new pastor of the ULC.
